The room at Hilton Port Moresby was at near capacity, alive with the sounds of PNG’s growing technology community, there for an evening of networking and interactive discussion.
Part of the Techlab PNG program, an Australian Government funded pilot to support development of the local technology community, these meetups are held monthly and feature speakers from the Techlab Accelerator Program.
This month’s speaker was Ms Vani Nades from Emstret Holdings, an Internet Service Provider dedicated to bringing affordable and high-speed internet to the residents of Papua New Guinea.
Ms Nades spoke about her journey as an entrepreneur. This includes having grown up in a local village and the challenges she faced along the way. The biggest challenge Ms Nades spoke about was the early lack of mentorship. She didn’t let it discourage her, and has now started her own co-working space intended to foster a community of entrepreneurs that will support each other on their journeys.
The key message Ms Nades shared is the need for entrepreneurs to persevere, embrace failure as an opportunity to learn, and to support one another as part of PNG’s growing technology community.
This message was reinforced by Dr Patrick Koliwan who MC’d the evening. Dr Koliwan weaved together stories about the importance of social networks for entrepreneurs and having access to experts who can provide further support.
There’s no doubt the technology community in PNG is thriving with over 50 people attending the meetup. This includes a thorough cross section of the community, with local entrepreneurs being joined by individuals from the corporate sector, and strong representation of women who made up around 40% of those in attendance.
