On Thursday 15 August, digital marketing experts Ben John Grady and Ian Hetri spoke to an audience of 75 local business owners and aspiring entrepreneurs about the importance of digital marketing at a seminar hosted by Techlab PNG.
Ben spoke to the audience about the importance of having a website that supports business goals and is vital for any business that wants to be taken seriously.
“A website is your best sales representative as it’s available 24/7,” said Ben. He also stressed the need to experiment and measure what’s working. “Once you know what’s working, you can spend more time focused on it.”
Ian spoke about the role of content. Businesses can use content to capture the attention of their target audience.”Without attention, nobody knows you,” Ian said.
Like Ben, Ian also emphasised the need for business owners to understand who their audience is, what their challenges are, and how best to reach them online. This is important as it helps business owners tailor content that will be of interest to their audience.
An advantage of digital marketing is that it is measurable in a way that other forms of advertising are not. Because it’s measurable, it is much easier to experiment and test ideas. By testing ideas, businesses can refine what works, which ensure their marketing becomes increasingly effective.
A key message from both speakers was that digital marketing offers many tools and approaches for growing a business. It is, however, easy to get lost without a focused strategy.
In wrapping up the seminar, Techlab co-founder and mentor, Matt Morrison said, “modern SMEs need digital marketing tools to drive their business. With so many free resources available online, it’s easier than ever for anyone to learn how to use them effectively.”
